I'm On The Roof

from Masco: Come On Along by Jersey Water

about

I had a friend in college, an organ major, who once asked me why I never walked her back to her dorm at night after hanging out. Another friend of hers, a jazz major, always walked her home from his dorm, she said.
At the time, as a pretty clueless 18-year-old male, unaware of the high incidents of sexual assault of women on college campuses, I just thought this jazz major friend of hers wanted to sleep with her and that's why he'd walk her home.

The summer I wrote this song, Summer 2000, I was living with my brother and his friends in this old house in Long Branch, NJ. It rained a lot and, since I had a job where I worked outside I'd get cut and not have to work on days it rained. I only napped on the roof once or twice that summer, but the act, somehow nostalgic, had enough of an impact on me to end up in a song. It shows up in a later song of mine too, "Ladybug Ladybug."

Not the worst way to end an album. Not with a bang, but a whimper. Most of my songs are whimpers anyway.

lyrics

I’m on the roof sleeping it off
I’m on the roof sleeping it off
I make it sound so tough

Would you forgive me for not walking you home
For not giving in to all I’m against and you’re for
Just the sirens calling your name
Go on home again
